Apple Shared Albums help · invitations

Shared album invitation not showing up: where to find it and how to get it resent

Apple shows shared album invitations in three places: Notification Center, the Photos app (Collections, or Shared Albums then Activity) and icloud.com/photos. If Shared Albums was off on your iPhone, turn it on and ask the owner to resend the invitation. For an album created on iOS 27 there is no invitation to find: the owner shares a link, so look for that link in Messages or Mail.

1. Turn on Shared Albums before anything else

Go to Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, then Photos, scroll down and make sure Shared Albums is on. Apple's invitation page starts with this check and adds: if the setting was off, ask the person who invited you to resend the invitation. In iOS 27, Apple's setup page also asks for iCloud Photos to be on. Sign in with the same Apple Account on every device where you expect the invite.

2. Look in Notification Center

From the Lock Screen, swipe up from the middle of the screen. From any other screen, swipe down from the top center. Tap the shared album invitation, then tap Accept.

3. Look in the Photos app

Open Photos and go to the Collections tab: the invitation can appear there. Otherwise scroll down to Shared Albums, tap Activity, then tap Accept.

4. Look on icloud.com/photos

In any browser, go to icloud.com/photos and sign in with your Apple Account. Click Shared Albums in the sidebar, then Accept or Decline in the invitation.

5. Album created on iOS 27? Look for a link, not an invitation

Since iOS 27, an owner invites people by sharing a link: Manage Shared Album, Invite Participants, or Copy Album Link. The link arrives through whatever app they chose, Messages, Mail or another, so search those apps for the album name. Open the link. If the owner requires approval, tap Send Request: Apple says you are notified when the album is shared with you.

On the owner's side, the request shows as a Shared Albums access request notification, or in Photos, Collections, the Profile button in the top-right corner, then Invitations and Access Requests, with Approve or Decline. A Child Account can only join if an adult member of its Family Sharing group participates in the album.

6. Check the connection and the software version

Open apple.com or iCloud.com on the device to confirm the connection. Apple also asks to check the minimum requirements for Shared Albums and to update the iPhone if needed: its iCloud requirements list iOS 12 or later for Shared Albums and iOS 27 for the upgraded features. If the album was created on iOS 27, a device on earlier software has to update or open the album on iCloud.com.

7. Check your email and the address the owner used

Ask the person which email address or iMessage phone number they used, then search your email for their name or the album name. If you once clicked Don't Send Me Shared Album Emails at the bottom of an invitation, open any shared album email, click that link again and choose Undo this change. If no invitation email is left, Apple says to contact Apple Support and ask to receive Shared Album invitations again.

8. Ask the owner to resend the invitation

On iOS 26: Photos, Collections, Shared Albums, the album they created, the More button, the album name, your name in the list of subscribers, then Resend Invitation. If they removed you earlier, they tap Add Participants instead and choose you from their contacts. On iOS 27: open the album, tap the Share button and send the link again, or Copy Album Link. Apple documents the same resend on a Mac and in iCloud for Windows. A declined invitation is fixed the same way.

9. If the message says the album is no longer shared

Apple's answer is to contact the owner of the shared album and ask whether it was deleted, or whether they can resend the invitation. When an owner deletes a shared album, it is removed from every subscriber's devices.

What Apple does not list

Apple's invitation pages do not mention restarting the iPhone, reinstalling Photos or signing out of iCloud. None of them replaces the two things Apple does ask for: Shared Albums on, and a fresh invitation or link from the owner.

When the invitation never arrives

If Shared Albums is on, the owner has resent the invitation to the right address and nothing shows in the three places above, contact Apple Support with your iOS version, the address used and whether the album was created on iOS 26 or iOS 27.

An owner on iOS 27 can skip the invitation entirely: the album link can be opened on an Apple or non-Apple device, and Apple says friends and family can join and contribute on the web even without an Apple Account. On iOS 26, the owner can turn on Public Website for people who do not use iCloud, which publishes the photos to a web page anyone with the address can see.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not getting a shared album invite?

The usual reasons in Apple's pages: Shared Albums is off on your iPhone, the invitation went to another email address or phone number, you once opted out of shared album emails, or the album was created on iOS 27 and shared as a link rather than an invitation. Turn Shared Albums on, check the address with the owner and ask for a resend.

Where do shared album invitations show up on iPhone?

In Notification Center, in the Photos app under Collections or under Shared Albums then Activity, and on icloud.com/photos under Shared Albums.

I declined the invitation by mistake. How do I get it back?

Ask the owner to resend it. On iOS 26 they select your name in the album's subscriber list and tap Resend Invitation. On iOS 27 they share the album link again.

How do I see shared album invites on iCloud.com?

Go to icloud.com/photos, sign in, click Shared Albums in the sidebar and accept the invitation there.

Can someone without an iPhone join a shared album?

For an album created on iOS 27, yes: the link opens on non-Apple devices and Apple says people can join and contribute on the web without an Apple Account. For an album created on iOS 26, the owner can turn on Public Website so people without iCloud can view the photos.

Can a child's account join a shared album?

Apple says a Child Account can only join a shared album if an adult member of its Family Sharing group participates in that album.

For your next event

Next time, a shared album that stays sealed until the reveal

Sealed is a free group photo app for iPhone and Android made by the studio behind this guide. Everyone joins a capsule from their own phone with a six-character code or a link, up to 30 phones and no guest account. Photos stay hidden the moment they are taken, and the whole group opens them together when the capsule's timer ends. Shared photos are deleted 30 days after the opening.

Sealed does not repair or recover Apple Shared Albums.
