Shared album not updating: why new photos are missing and what to check

When a shared album stops updating, Apple's checklist runs in this order: Shared Albums on, internet connection, the album compared on another device or icloud.com/photos, the owner's iCloud storage, then the software version. An album created or upgraded on iOS 27 is read-only on older software, which looks like a sync failure. On iOS 26 or earlier, the last documented step is to back up the album, turn Shared Albums off, wait 10 minutes and turn it back on.

1. Make sure Shared Albums is on, with the same Apple Account

Go to Settings, tap Apps, then Photos, scroll down and make sure Shared Albums is on. The switch also lives in Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos, where iOS 27 asks for iCloud Photos to be on as well. Sign in with the same Apple Account on every device you expect to update. Shared Albums and iCloud Shared Photo Library are different features: this page is about an album you were invited to or created, not a whole library.

2. Test the connection on your device and the sender's

Apple's check is simple: open apple.com or iCloud.com on each device involved. If the page does not load, fix that connection first. Then look at Apple's System Status page for a reported issue.

3. Compare the album on icloud.com/photos or another device

Open the album on another of your devices, at icloud.com/photos, or ask another subscriber what they see. If the new photos are there, the problem is limited to your iPhone. If they are missing there too, they never reached the album: ask the sender to check they added them to this exact album, with Select, the Share button, Add to Shared Album, then the album name. Apple says participants receive a notification when new photos are added.

4. Ask the owner about iCloud storage

For an album created or upgraded on iOS 27, everything stored in it counts toward the owner's iCloud storage, including what participants add. Apple's checklist names a full owner storage as a reason content does not appear: the owner can manage their storage or upgrade their iCloud+ plan. Albums created on iOS 26 or earlier, and temporary albums, do not count toward storage. Details in Do shared albums count against iCloud storage?.

5. Check the software version: iOS 27 albums are read-only on older iOS

When an album is created on iOS 27, or upgraded to it by its owner, participants on earlier software see it as read-only. You can look, but your own photos do not upload and the like and comment controls are gone. To get them back, update every device you use to version 27 or later, or open the album on iCloud.com. Apple recommends version 27 or later whenever the device supports it. If you are the owner and the upgrade failed, see Could not upgrade shared album.

6. Check the limits that stop uploads without a message

Apple's limits for albums created on iOS 26 or earlier: 1000 photos and videos per contributor per hour across all shared albums, 10,000 per day, 5000 photos and videos in any one album, 200 albums an owner can share and 200 a person can subscribe to. Photos are reduced to 2048 pixels on the long edge, videos can be up to fifteen minutes and are delivered at up to 720p, and spatial photos and videos are not supported. If a limit is reached, Apple says to delete some photos or videos before adding new ones.

For albums created on iOS 27 or later, the only limit on photos is the owner's available iCloud storage, with up to 100 participants per album and 5000 items in a temporary album.

7. Check that the person can add photos

If one person's photos never arrive while everyone else's do, the owner checks the permission. On iOS 27: Manage Shared Album, the participant's name, then Can Add Photos. On iOS 26: the More button, the album name, then Participants Can Add Photos.

8. On iOS 26 or earlier: back up, then turn Shared Albums off and on

Apple keeps this step for version 26 or earlier only, and asks you to back up the photos in the shared album first. Then go to Settings, Apps, Photos, turn off Shared Albums, wait 10 minutes and turn it back on. Those 10 minutes are the only waiting time Apple documents for shared albums.

What Apple does not list

Restarting the iPhone, leaving the album and rejoining, or deleting the album are not in Apple's checklist. Leaving means the owner has to invite you again. Deleting the album permanently deletes all of its photos, on every device, so save anything you need first: tap the photo, tap the Share button, then Save Image or Save Video.

When the album still does not update

Save the photos you can see, then contact Apple Support with the iOS version on both sides, whether the album was created on iOS 26 or iOS 27, and the result of the comparison in step 3. Apple's pages give no further step, and Sealed cannot repair or recover an iCloud album.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my iPhone shared album not updating with all pictures?

Some uploads never go through: a contributor above Apple's hourly or daily limit on iOS 26 albums, an album at 5000 items, an owner out of iCloud storage on an iOS 27 album, a participant without the Can Add Photos permission, or unsupported items such as spatial photos and videos. Compare on icloud.com/photos to see which photos actually reached the album.

How long does a shared album take to update?

Apple does not publish a delay. The only waiting time in its steps is the 10 minutes between turning Shared Albums off and back on, on iOS 26 or earlier. Apple says participants receive a notification when new photos are added.

How do I refresh a shared album on iPhone?

There is no refresh button in Apple's steps. Check the connection, compare the album on icloud.com/photos, and on iOS 26 or earlier use the documented reset: back up, turn Shared Albums off, wait 10 minutes, turn it on.

How do I add photos to a shared album?

From your Library or any album, tap Select, choose the photos, tap the Share button, tap Add to Shared Album and choose the album. With a shared album open, the Add button does the same. On iOS 26 the last step is Post, on iOS 27 it is Done.

Why are the photos in a shared album smaller than the originals?

In albums created on iOS 26 or earlier, Apple reduces photos to 2048 pixels on the long edge and delivers videos at up to 720p. Albums created or upgraded on iOS 27 keep the original resolution.

Why is the shared album not syncing after I updated to iOS 27?

Check the owner's iCloud storage first: on iOS 27 albums every item counts toward it. Then make sure iCloud Photos and Shared Albums are on under Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos, and compare the album on icloud.com/photos.

For your next event

Next time, a shared album that stays sealed until the reveal

Sealed is a free group photo app for iPhone and Android made by the studio behind this guide. Everyone joins a capsule from their own phone with a six-character code or a link, up to 30 phones and no guest account. Photos stay hidden the moment they are taken, and the whole group opens them together when the capsule's timer ends. Shared photos are deleted 30 days after the opening.

Sealed does not repair or recover Apple Shared Albums.
