Start with the participation architecture
A QR guest gallery turns each participant’s phone into a possible capture or upload point. The organiser displays or sends a code, guests open a browser or product flow, and files move toward a shared event space. That model can collect simultaneous viewpoints from different rooms. Its success depends on understandable joining, compatible browsers, permissions, connectivity and the willingness of guests to use their own devices.
A one-phone capsule makes a different social object. One person creates the capsule, the group physically passes that phone, and the same device remains the point of capture and later reveal. Participation becomes sequential rather than simultaneous. This reduces coverage and creates a single point of failure, yet it can make the boundary easier to explain: one phone, one custodian, one local capsule and no remote contribution path.
Trace every file before choosing
For a QR workflow, ask whether guests capture inside a browser, upload existing photos, install an app or do more than one of these. Then identify where originals and derivatives are stored, who can open the gallery, whether links can be forwarded, how long the host retains access and which export preserves useful quality. Official product pages for Scene, GuestCam, GUESTPIX and Kululu describe different combinations, so verify the exact service rather than assuming all QR codes behave alike.
With Sealed, images belong to the capsule on the phone that created it. There is no guest account, but that must not be confused with anonymous cloud contribution. The absence of remote invitations, remote uploads and device sync means losing access to the phone is materially different from losing a gallery link. Check battery, local storage, camera permission and physical custody before starting, then decide who may handle exports after the reveal.
Separate delayed viewing from privacy
Some QR products hide contributions until a scheduled reveal, while others display a gallery or slideshow during the event. A one-phone capsule can also hide captures until its countdown finishes. Those timing choices affect attention and surprise, not consent by themselves. Tell people when photos become visible, who controls visibility and whether contributors or viewers can save copies. Avoid saying that hidden photos are automatically private or safer.
Give attendees a usable way to decline photography and a person to contact about an identifiable image. Do not assume that scanning a code, entering a venue or accepting one portrait authorises all later capture and publication. Sealed does not detect or report screenshots, and a revealed image can be copied using controls outside the app. A hosted gallery can likewise spread through downloads or forwarded links. Plan governance beyond the reveal.
Test the failure modes in the venue
For a QR gallery, print the real code and ask an unbriefed person to join with a different phone. Test weak signal, browser camera permission, a large upload, a forwarded link, moderation and the final download. Confirm current limits and pricing on the official service near the event date. A polished marketing page does not prove that the venue network, guest mix or chosen plan will support your intended flow.
For a one-phone capsule, run a complete miniature session on the actual device. Check available storage, battery drain, handoff instructions, no-preview capture and countdown completion. Include an unwanted test frame so the organiser understands the post-reveal controls. Keep separate documentary coverage for moments that cannot be repeated. Sequential access means the passed phone may be elsewhere when an important scene happens, and no cloud account can recover a local capsule automatically.
Use a decision rule the group can repeat
Choose QR when the requirement is broad participation from personal phones, simultaneous angles, remote or late contribution, and a host-managed shared gallery. Then compare providers on join friction, moderation, retention, export, support and access controls. Choose the one-phone model when the requirement is an intentional relay among people in the same place, with blind capture and a later local reveal on the same device.
Write the rule in one sentence before inviting anyone: either “scan and contribute from your phone” or “take a turn with this phone and wait for the reveal.” If the instruction needs both models, define which system is authoritative and how duplicate or sensitive files will be handled. Frequently asked questions
Can guests upload to a Sealed capsule by QR code?
No. Sealed currently uses one phone passed in person. It has no guest upload link, remote invitation flow or cross-device capsule sync.
Is a QR photo gallery always browser based?
No. Products vary: a code may open browser capture, an upload page, an app handoff or another flow. Test the official current product on representative phones.
Which model captures more angles?
A multi-phone QR model can enable simultaneous viewpoints, but actual participation is not guaranteed. A one-phone relay is intentionally sequential and therefore narrower.
Does delayed reveal make either option private?
No. Timing affects when photos are seen. Privacy also depends on consent, accounts, links, storage, downloads, screenshots, exports and later sharing.
